The MiG-29 military jet crashed in a forest near the Russian capital on Friday morning, reported by the Sputnik.

A MiG-29 fighter jet has crashed in the Moscow suburbs. Both pilots managed to eject from the aircraft, local media report.

The twin-engine jet belonged to the Gromov Flight Research Institute, media reported, citing sources in law enforcement agencies, a spokesperson for the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). Both pilots ejected from the aircraft and survived. One of the pilots allegedly received an injury after he ejected from the aircraft.

“The plane fell in the forest near the village of Dmitrovskoye. The reasons for this are being investigated. Both pilots managed to eject,” security sources told Russian news agency RIA News.

Russia’s Channel 5 reported earlier that the MiG-29 had made an emergency landing at the Zhukovsky airport in Moscow Region after a fire erupted in the cabin during a test flight. According to the media outlet, one person was injured in the incident.

The UAC added that a special commission had been set up to look into the cause of the incident.

The plane was performing a training flight after taking off from Zhukovsky Airport in southeast Moscow when it got into trouble.

A problem with the “control system” caused the plane to crash, Russian defence sources said.

There were no casualties or damage on the ground as a reuslt of the crash, which was far away from populated areas.
