Do you have hyperacusis?
Posted on
Hello, non-military guy here. I am a graduate psychology student.
I know that vets often come home with tinnitus, but I’m curious if anyone gets hyperacusis as well.
Quick and dirty, hyperacusis is “collapsed tolerance to sound.” It usually starts from an acoustic trauma (explosion, loud music). Basically once it starts, all sounds are horrible and can cause pain and emotional distress. The condition ranges from you being permanently house-bound with earmuffs on - to - fully resolving to the point of being able to attend games/concerts/etc.
It’s rare and never talked about so I wonder if many people have it but don’t know what’s called or don’t discuss it with doctors since they don’t ask you about it.
I have it and it is awful. If anyone has any experience or input on this, I’m interested to know.
Thanks.
