French Artillery Doctrine in Cold War
Posted on
While there is remarkably lot material on French WW1, interwar and WW2 doctrine, there is little or nothing on post-war developments. They switched from 4 to 5 gun batteries in 1967-1973 period, and only sources I have in English is US commentary on French artillery in early stages of Vietnam war, but that is not representative as they were forced on defence and haven't used their artillery in conventional manner a lot.
Americans have noted that the French forward observer computed firing data mentally and sent them directly to the guns. This resulted in faster response time but less accurate compared to US method. They also noted that French have developed procedures to shift fires quickly from one direction to another.
However, did they had a preference (for conventional war, not COIN) to use massed fire (like Soviets or Finns) or preferred using battery as basic unit of fire?
