History of US Army Air Crew helmet art?
Posted on
Hello! Been interested in Air Crew and Crew Chiefs for as long as I could remember. I love how they tend to major responsibilities as aerial observers, door gunners, and basically maintaining their assigned platforms. With that being said, I would love to understand where the personalization of Air Crew Helmet art came into play? I've seen US Army Crew members with awesome designs and artistic demon faces, skulls, and other sick artistic styles on Crew Masks. I know back in the 60's for Vietnam the custom patches and retro art was also seen at the time. But I'm trying to understand when did this concept start? Does commander and Unit have to approve art before they are allowed to wear? Does it have to represent what their Unit stands for? Where did this first start? Oh! And is it true that the US Army ONLY allows AIRCREW members to personalize these crew masks/helmets??? Thank you!
