How to deal with racist and/or homophobic comrades/instructors.
Posted on
I won't go into detail too much, just know that I am not serving in the US-American Forces (but NATO military) and technically we are obliged to report racist/homophobic/anti-semetic incidents but obviously they'd need to be some sort of proof, which is obviously difficult to come by.
I did say my two cents to comments such as "Saying Nigger is nothing bad because look at what the Spanish word is!" or "Try and walk around New Orleans at night and see what happens.", "Why do homosexuals always have to voice that they are homosexuals. I don't care BUT...", "Look at what they call themselves? So why can't we?" and I am simply getting frustrated, because context obviously doesn't matter in their world.
I get that the armed forces often attract more right-wing leaning people and that leftwingers like me are usually the exception so I did not expect everyone to have the exact same political ideals as me, which is no issue whatsoever but the degree of far-right idiots I've had to deal with since I joined makes me lose faith in the people I have to serve with.
I stayed calm and didn't let the discussion get too heated but I am getting a bit disheartened and would like to know if there are others who've experienced similar things and what you did in this situation.
