Is promotion/cool-job-slot-openings in the Marines as bad as reputed? Is it any better for officers? Compared to Army?

I always wanted to do NROTC Marine option in college, I was talked out of it in favor of Army ROTC but still have just enough time to change my mind. I am in an incredibly competitive area, I am not getting the ROTC scholarship for the first year, and I know I can change ROTC programs, but I would rather put out feelers anyway. If this is the wrong subreddit for this, please direct me towards the right place.
I have heard extensively that there are much less spots for, well, everything in the Marines (obviously, due to size), but is it comparatively THAT much harder to get promoted and or get the cooler jobs? I am interested in anything special forces, being an Infantry or Tank Officer, Ground Intelligence is my ultimate preference. I plan to stay in the military for 4 to 12 years. Pay discrepancy (I hear you get better incentive pay and whatnot in the Army but haven't seen evidence either way) is not a concern. I just want to make the most of the time I spend in the military, certain things about the Marines set it apart, like I have done boxing, kickboxing, and jujitsu for four years and am very interested in MCMAP. I like the pride and attitude as well, I just don't want to get stuck not being able to advance myself.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, everyone I talk to is significantly biased in favor of their respective branch.
Edit: My internet research suggests there are simply more opportunities in the Army, but I'd like feedback from people with actual experience. If anyone is interested, I'm applying to VMI within the next few days and that's absolutely where I plan to go, I REALLY ought to get in, my SAT is 120pts above their 75th percentile (1400 flat), for example.
