Looking for a Korean War veteran named Lieutenant William ‘Sam’ Mace of Akron, Ohio who served in the 2nd Infantry Division (and I believe the 2nd Infantry Regiment)
Posted on
Hi everyone! I’m a law student who does a lot of history reading and I’ve recently been incredibly touched by the stories of many of our veterans who served in the Korean War. Although I have little to offer, I’ve been spending quite a bit of my time researching the people I’ve read about so I can send them letters of appreciation to let them know they aren’t forgotten. Sadly, man of them have passed away and almost all of them are hard to track down since they have little digital footprint. Lieutenant William ‘Sam’ Mace is one such person.
Lieutenant Mace’s story is incredible, and he might be especially well known for his actions during the Battle of Chongchon River, where he navigated a Sherman tank through what would be know as ‘The Gauntlet,’ arguably the greatest ambush of American military forces in history. Lieutenant Mace’s actions that day of clearing the roads under constant Chinese fire while plowing forward to attack Chinese machine gun nests were the actions of a hero, and too often we forget our heroes.
Unfortunately, I can find little information on him online. I simply wanted to write him a letter of thanks and I was wondering if anyone knew a website or tool I could use to see if he is even still alive. I’ve spent hours on google searches and only have a few articles on him, along with book references. If anyone has any ideas, I would be immensely appreciative. Letting these veterans know how much they’re appreciated is so important to me.
