Hi, I'm looking for information on Lieutenant General Douglas Mackinnon Baillie Hamilton Cochrane, 12th Earl of Dundonald, KCB, KCVO (29 October 1852 – 12 April 1935)
He had ties to Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, South Africa, Canada and possibly India and Egypt, and involved in these wars; Mahdist war, Second Boer War & the First World War.
He was an inventor, much like his father before him.. mainly devising and improving new implements to weapons and vehicles..
He was married to Winifred Bamford Hesketh of Gwrych Castle and between 1886 & 1888 she commissioned two pieces of portraits of them both by an American artist, Anna Lea Merritt (The works.. have since have gone missing ~1910 ), which would have been hung next to each other at that Castle in Abergele, North Wales.
At the castle there were a lot of silverware, jewellery, furnitures, paintings, weapons and much more misc items, so many of these items would be inscribed/engraved with either the mottoes, their names or the castle's name.
If you have anything relating to any of these, please be aware that I'm not looking to claim them, I'm simply looking to see where they have gone and to document them.
The keywords I'm looking for that are related to both of these people are as follows;
- 'In Deo Mea Spes', 'Virtute Et Labore'
- Earl of Dundonald / Countess of dundonald (between 1885 - 1936)
- 'Douglas Mackinnon Baillie Hamilton Cochrane' or 'Douglas MBHC'
- Winifred Cochrane, Lady W.Cochrane, Lady Dundonald
- Lord Cochrane, General Cochrane
- Gwrych Castle, Abergele Castle
