Need help researching my grandfathers WWII Duty
Posted on
My grandfather was a medic in WWII, serving as a Captain in the 664th Medical Clearing Company. He passed long ago, and like many of his generation, didn’t share many stories of his time overseas. Unfortunately his records we lost, and I don’t have any information about what he did while overseas. I was hoping someone could help me piece together where he was by taking a look at some of the patches he brought back from Europe. I’ve begun research, but am confused by what I’ve found. You can see he has patches from the 10th Armored Division, from both the Second and Third Army, and from XX Corps. Is it possible that he served in each? I know he was awarded the Bronze Star for service in 1944 and 1945 for campaigns in France and Germany, but is it possible to find out what specifically led to the award? Last, he told my Grandmother that he got his Purple Heart from getting the flu, but it’s my understanding that you could only be awarded this medal for wounds received in battle. Is this correct? Thanks for any help you can provide in helping me understand a little more about how and where he served.
