He received every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. In 1945, at the age of 19, Murphy single-handedly held off a company of German soldiers for an entire hour and then led a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition." Wanting to enlist after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Murphy was turned down by the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps for being underweight and underage. He got his sister to help falsify his birth date and managed to get into the Army. He ended up He receiving every military combat award for valor available from the US Army.
