Question about honoring a veteran
Posted on
Last year, I lost my brother - a USMC veteran - to suicide. I am not a veteran and have no military affiliation.
I noticed on Facebook that many of his fellow soldiers posted tributes that included the phrase “Until Valhalla.” I looked up the meaning and learned it’s essentially an oath between soldiers to keep up the fight, even when someone has died and a promise they’ll see each other in Valhalla when they’ve all passed.
I liked the phrase and in thinking of ways to honor and memorialize my brother, I’ve have thought about getting it tattooed on me. My way of saying, you’re gone, but not forgotten and I’ll see you again one day.
But, like I said, I’m not military and I have never seen combat. I don’t want to appropriate a culture I haven’t earned. The tattoo would be somewhere discrete so very few people would ever see it. But I would know it’s there and I want to make sure I’m being respectful in honoring my brother.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
