Question: Minesweeping/metal detecting in a war zone
Posted on
I’m just a metal detecting dork, but I use an ex-military Vallon VMC-1 “mine detector”, as I find it even more sensitive than my fancypants Minelab unit - plus it folds up so nicely. Sure it’s as heavy as an adult raccoon and has the ergonomics of a gulag, but I like it.
However, it lights up like a Christmas tree and farts out it’s little tone on even the smallest of metal bits. In a war zone, especially a modern one where a bewildering amount of ammo is expended, how would one know if they came across an actual mine instead of bullets/bullet fragments? I assuming finding something like a buried shell would be obvious, but what about mines with minimal metallic components? I was watching a video where a guy was using one like mine, and it was zipping like crazy, but dude just kept walking. Are they really only used to find buried shells?
