Questions about building a shadow box
Posted on
Hi all, I'm using the quarantine to finally finish this project, a single shadow box with both my dad's and my medals, etc. I can already tell this is going to be infuriating and involve a lot of swearing at inanimate objects.
Hopefully someone can ease my frustration with some tips? The backing is black moire silk over foam board. How do you affix items that don't have pins, like unit patches? Also, some of our medals have safety pins rather than studs/prongs, so they can't be pushed into the foam either.
The medals are going to be mounted individually rather than grouped as they are on a uniform, which is an extra level of headache. This was just a cost decision, it was way too expensive to get two professionally mounted sets. Some of them are pretty old and wrinkled or creased. Can they be ironed?
Looking at other people's shadow boxes online, some of the medals appear to be perfectly flat and smooth as if the ribbon itself has been stretched and glued down. Is this the case? If so, what adhesive is used that doesn't bleed through? Or is it better to just mount them from the pins and let them hang by their own weight?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I'm doing this, so any other pointers I haven't thought of are appreciated. Thanks in advance and stay healthy, everyone.
