What options are there for a vet about to be homeless?
Posted on
Long post sorry if this isn't the place for it, appreciate anyone who reads this.
A good friend of mine is about to be homeless, come jan 1st, his lease got changed on the place he's been living in for years they now require $6400 in monthly income to rent there. He essentially lives off his full disabilities plus teaches English on the side at an esl school. He has 2 cats and a service dog, he is a 100% disabled vet who was honorably discharged. Main issue he is running into is he declared bankruptcy earlier this year. Nobody will let him rent, due to his credit/bankruptcy, any extended stay hotels won't let him bring his pets.
He's been freaking out about this and I've told him to call the VA, to which he said they will only offer him a group home he wouldn't be able to bring his pets along with and he'd rather live in his car with his pets than give them up. I've offered him a couch as well at my place but long term my small place with my pets and his would just fucking suck for everyone involved but I won't let him live out of a car.
I've found the number for the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4AID-VET (877-424-3838), but he said they will just offer a group home for him.
His bankruptcy was in relation to student loans he got for his masters in English, he's never been late on his rent, car payments, cell phone etc. He got behind on student loans and according to him someone at the VA suggested he declare bankruptcy to help him restructure + lower his student loan debt. They suggested it because he already had somewhere to live and a stable home + environment. But that is no longer the case.
Any advice here or suggestions? He's kinda freaking out but not doing anything so I figured I'd try help if possible. Thanks for your time if you read this.
