The United States Navy has a new four-star admiral today. And she’s quite a woman. Michelle Howard is the first woman in the 238 years of U.S. Navy history to be raised to this rank. The ceremony took place at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 and was presided over by the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus.

She proudly wore the award for the rest of her life.

McDonald had no choice but to fight for her life in return. Although many people thought that Layka would be too aggressive, McDonald fought to adopt her, and she is now an integral part of his family. He still lets her find bombs and perform bite exercises to "satisfy her curiosity" and relieve stress, but at home Layka has adapted into just another gentle family dog.

Army veterans were overlooked for the award due to racial prejudice.
