An American research and development organization Draper Laboratory (official name is “The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Inc”) has been awarded $191 million for the U.S. Navy Trident II weapons systems contract.

Pentagon said on Friday that Draper Laboratory is awarded a $191
million contract for the production of Trident II D5 Strategic Weapon System MARK 6 Guidance Equivalent Units.

The new system had to fit into the space within the missile used by the previous system, constraining design in terms of volume and electrical and mechanical interfaces.

The upgraded guidance system will maintain compatibility with other subsystems provided by a number of other companies, while staying on schedule and within budget.

According to a Pentagon’s statement, the work is expected to be completed by July 31, 2022.

Also noted that: ” If the option is exercised, work will continue through July 31, 2023. Fiscal 2019 weapons procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $189,489,000; and United Kingdom funds in the amount of $1,540,190 are being obligated on this award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.” 

The Trident II weapons system is the primary strategic deterrent for both the U.S. and the U.K. As the U.S. Navy’s strategic guidance prime contractor, Draper has designed and supported the guidance system for every fleet ballistic missile deployed since the program began in 1955.
