Yemen Houthi fighters claim to have hit Saudi Arabia M2 Bradley in Najran province

Posted on September 7, 2018

Yemen-based Houthi militants claimed to have hit Saudi Arabia M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle at the Saudi Arabian province of Najran.

Houthi media released footage on Thursday showing the of attack on M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle in the south of the country along the border with Yemen.  The damage inflicted on the infantry fighting vehicle has been difficult to assess from the images.

It is noted that the rebels attacked one of Saudi Arabia’s border defensive points using the modern Iranian ATGM.

An armed conflict between troops of Saudi Arabia and Houthi insurgents is taking place at the Saudi–Yemeni border, at the southern edge of the regions of Najran, Jizan, and Asir. The conflict began in response to the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen.

According to the Army-technology.com, the M2 Bradley is a tracked armoured fighting vehicle and designed by  BAE Systems Land & Armaments (formerly United Defence).

The role of the M2 infantry fighting vehicle is to transport infantry on the battlefield, to provide fire cover to dismounted troops and to suppress enemy tanks and fighting vehicles. The M2 carries three crew, commander, gunner and driver, plus six fully equipped infantry men.

The main armament is a ATK Ammunition Systems (formerly Boeing Ordnance) 25mm M242 Bushmaster chain gun. The M242 has a single barrel with an integrated dual feed mechanism and remote feed selection. The gunner can select single or multiple shot mode. The standard rate of fire is 200 rounds a minute but the gun is optionally converted to 500 rounds a minute. An M240C 7.62mm machine gun is mounted coaxially to right of the Bushmaster.

The M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle has a welded aluminum armor hull. Front arc has a spaced laminated aluminum and steel armor. Initial production variant provided protection against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds. Front arc of the latest models provide protection against 30-mm armor-piercing rounds. Also vehicle is fitted with explosive reactive armor and withstands hits from RPG rounds. Bottom was reinforced with steel plates for improved protection against mines. The M2 Bradley is also fitted with NBC protection system.

Currently, the Royal Saudi Arabian Armed Forces operate a total of around 400 M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.
