I previously posted about my Cousin Alex and his fight in Ukraine (here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MilitaryStories/comments/w96sp5/an_american_and_a_frenchman_in_a_foxhole_in/) this story is significantly LESS serious.
When my cousin got hooked up to his unit one of the reason why is because he had earned himself a CAB and he had actively been engaged in combat in both his tours with the US Army. As a result of this even though he only said he was a 11B he was put on this unit which was filled with the elite of the elite with the Ukrainian foreign legion.
My cousin was surrounded by ex-SAS, French foreign legion, delta force, navy seals, etc. A huge majority of the guys he was with had done prior PMC work. Pretty much all of them had some sort of combat experience and it was an elite unit. He was often in awe of the stories he heard.
Now in the early days of the Ukrainian Foreign Legion the Ukrainians weren't really doing a great job at vetting out the bullshitters. There was this one guy, we'll call him John. Alex always had a feeling John story was bullshit. John claimed he was former Navy Seal Team 2.
Now my Alex was never special forces, before he came to join the Ukrainian Foreign Legion he didn't have a whole lot of time around Special Forces but he said John story just didn't feel right. John was a bit chubby, how he handled him didn't match up to what the other professional heavy hitters handled themselves, John was also really wishy washy on the details of his service. However Alex didn't have the knowledge to call him out.
Well one day, they are sitting down having a meal and Alex remembers that two people he's having a meal where actually former members of Seal Team 2. Alex had every reason to believe those two people were in fact the real deal. Sometimes you can kinda just tell based upon how someone carries themselves. So lets call one member of Seal team 2 Scott, and the other Matt.
Alex says "Hey Scott, Matt did you know John over there was also on Seal Team 2"
Scott, and Matt both stop dead in their tracks, look at John and go "You were seal team 2?"
John looks up, "um...yea, yea I was...4 years" now everyone is around the same age so Scott goes "Yea, what years were you a part of seal team 2?"
John goes "What years were you part of seal team 2?" Scott smiles "You first bud" John doesn't wanna answer " Matt chimes "We asked you what years were you a part of Seal Team 2?"
My cousin said at this point he figures he had busted John.
John finally says 2010-2014.
Scott leans back and goes "That's strange" John goes "Why that?" he goes "Cause I was on Seal Team 2 during 3 of those years and I don't remember you"
John stutters "Well I guess you musta forgot me"
Scott: "Nah I wouldn't have have forgotten you, every man on that team is my brother, and I don't forget about my brothers"
Matt chimes in "And I left that team in 2012, and I don't remember you"
John is real nervous now
John goes "Well I was there"
Scott goes "Alright then, tell me about one mission Seal Team 2 did well you were on the team"
John goes "I can't talk about that"
Scott "There are plenty of missions which you could talk about"
John "Yea like what?"
Scott "How about training? Tell me the year, and month we did training with other special forces unit"
John: "You know I can't talk about that"
Matt: "Look man your lying"
John: "No I'm not"
Scott: "Look man Seal Teams aren't that big, your claiming to have been on my seal team at a time I was on that seal team, I know every guy on that team, I know their partners, I know about their families, I know about their hobbies, I knew everything about my guys on my team and I got zero fucking clue who you are"
Matt: "I gotta go with John, I knew every guy on that team, and I got no idea who you are"
John: "Well..."
Matt: "Look if you can't be honest about your service and what your capable of I'm not comfortable with you on this team"
Eventually John caved
Apparently John only military experience was a few weeks at Army basic training. He ended up dropping out of Army basic and that was his entire military experience. He was never even in the Navy. Once this got out they went to their Ukrainian officer and demanded John be removed from the team and John was removed from the team.
