How would you compare infantry (11A), military police (31A), and intel officer (35A) roles?
Posted on
I'm currently in the process of joining as an 09S (officer candidate). My long-term goal is to make SOF. Currently, my top two choices are 11A and 31A; 35A is my 4th or 5th choice. As a civilian, I work in analytics and have a strong quantitative background. Several people I know -- including an officer I had recently met who reviewed my packet -- strongly recommend me for intel, but I really want to be in the field.
As such, I've been thinking more about MP, wondering how much it would blend tactical and analytic duties. I understand that most of military policing does not involve conventional law enforcement as we would know it (especially in the 2LT's position) and would hope to be an airborne MP officer if I get that branch. For SOF purposes, I know that I can branch-detail into the other roles.
My questions follow:
- What are the jobs like?
- How would you compare the day-to-day lifestyles and duties?
- How would you describe the police-intelligence duties of MP officers? How would you compare them to the duties of standard intel officers?
- Am I wondering on the right track for MPs?
- Does being an MP officer provide strong advancement opportunities or unique advantages for becoming an SOF officer?
- How would you compare MP to intel for becoming a PsyOps officer, since enlisted PsyOps soldiers start their training through MP school?
