75th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor
Posted on
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor where over 2,400 Americans were killed and over 1,000 more wounded. The events of December 7, 1941 – called a “date which will live in infamy” by President Roosevelt – were unprecedented and unfathomable to the American people. A foreign attack with this level of devastation would not be seen again until September 11, 2001.
Just as September 11th defines our generation, especially those who served and still serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, the attack on Pearl Harbor defined that generation as it lead to United States’ involvement in the second World War. In many ways it defines our nation still. The trajectory of our nation shifted in the immediate moments thereafter and changed dramatically when war was declared the next day.
In the days and months that followed, the United States prepared for a war that would encompass the world. Men and women prepared to change and sacrifice their lives to avenge the fallen at Pearl Harbor and protect millions more from harm in the future. “The Greatest Generation” was inspired to defend our country and defend our freedom at any cost.
That day, just as September 11th, is a reminder that liberty has enemies and that life can be altered in an instant. But it is also a reminder that Americans are always ready and willing to be defenders of liberty. Today we honor those who lost their lives 75 years ago at Pearl Harbor, give thanks for those who survived, and reflect on those who knew the rarity of freedom and thus answered the call to protect it.
