Advice for a 2LT
Posted on
(US Army) I’m a ADA 2LT doing my “platoon leader” time and I get a lot of grief for looking “soft” or having a “dad bod.” I played Division 1 football, have a 300 APFT score, and got a 578 and 581 on both ACFT “diagnostics” I’ve taken since commissioning. Despite this, most of the NCOs in my company call me “Lil’ Debby” after my platoon SGT called me that at PT one day. I know they aren’t being malicious, but it bothers me because my physical performance is nothing at which to scoff.
I’ve thought about asking to not be called “Lil’ Debby,” but I don’t want to come off as a “snowflake” and lose whatever rapport I have. My 1st SGT told me I need to go to “ranger school” and get “tab’d” before he’ll go back to using my name and rank, so I don’t think the other NCOs would listen to me anyway.
I’m not opposed to “ranger school,” but it seems like an unnecessary barrier to cross just to be addressed by my name and rank. How should I handle this situation? I “smoked” some of the lower enlisted when they tried to call me “Lil’ Debby,” but I don’t think this would go over well with an NCO.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
