Advise on Getting Ready for Fort Drum?
Posted on
I am currently in Black Phase of AIT/OSUT about to go on HBL in about 3 weeks. Graduation is getting closer and we all know where we're getting stationed. Which is odd since we were told they wouldn't tell us until the end of our cycle. At the time of posting this we're still dealing with the Covid Pandemic and may potentially be facing a second wave. Covid has screwed everything up for us and our Drill Sergeants, we were in processing for an entire month and much of our training has been rushed, some of it like the Gas Chamber and Combatives were even taken out entirely (which honestly doesn't bother me too much since I'll have more time to work on my skills at my duty station). There are even rumors floating around that we might not even do FTX since we've already met every graduation requirement, they might just kick us out and send us straight to our units as soon as we graduate. We may even be graduating sooner than anticipated, which would make sense since we only have about 3 weeks left after HBL. It would also explain why we're being told our duty stations so soon. It wouldn't make sense to keep us here on base for that short amount of time only to leave (if anybody else who graduated during the Covid Pandemic can share their experience I'd appreciate it, also anybody who graduated close to HBL). Anyway, I'm getting stationed at Fort Drum, which works out for me pretty well since it's close to home. The only challenge I see myself facing is the weather. I've been training at Fort Benning and gotten used to the heat, now I'll be working in an environment that reaches -30 degrees Fahrenheit. Our Drill Sergeants have been giving us tips and tricks on how to deal with it, like cock socks and waiting 10 minutes for our clothes to thaw before taking them off. Is there anything else I need to know in advance, weather or otherwise? Anything I can do to prepare?
