By the WHAT flank?!
Posted on
Marine Corps boot camp, final drill, senior DI is at the front of a formation of about 80 recruits. He calls a right flank, but he doesn't say "BY THE RIGHT FLANK, MARCH!" which is the textbook drill command. Instead, he says "AAAAH UHH AAAAAAAH flank HAAAAAACH!"
So the front half of the platoon flanks right and the back half of the platoon flanks both left and right. What showed real skill is how we managed to reform the platoon while marching. Needless to say we didn't do so hot on final drill...but we passed. After we got back to the squad bay, senior DI brings out a radio, puts on some tunes and tells us to relax. And that's what we did.
We heard from the platoon that got first place in the final drill. When they got back to their squad bay, their senior DI told them they placed dead last in the final drill and then they had a smoke session.
