Did the combat fighting/war in Afghanistan change the perception of European armed forces in the 00s/10s?
Posted on
So, most of the 90s many European allies kept to UN peacekeeping missions in various parts of the world. That became the default mission for many. But with Afghanistan, peacekeepers would be engaged in warmaking situations. For countries like a Denmark or Sweden or Norway which have decades of peacekeeping experience, how did this change their military thinking? How was the perception of their forces in 2014 compared to prior to 2001? And what about newer NATO allies from the East like a Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia etc. Did Afghanistan offer them the opportunity to adjust their forces to a modern NATO standard? How is the perception of their nation's performance in that war?
