fake veteran?
Posted on
hi, i hope this is the right place to ask this question--if not, maybe someone would be nice enough to redirect me.
long story short: a good friend of mine recently met a guy, and he's extremely proud of his service.
the thing is, i'm a little wary about this guy. he claims he was in the 75th Ranger Regiment, and he was, according to him, "Special Forces" (though i thought only Green Berets were Special Forces, but whatever).
he's told my friend (now his gf) that he's done a lot of "black ops" and "highly classified operations". in her words: "he's like super-super-Special Forces".
when you ask about his service, he says "it's mostly classified" and "pretty much my entire record is redacted". he says he served 3 tours in Iraq/Afghanistan, and his duties were "mostly high-value target acquisition and elimination".
the weird thing is, now that he's out of the service, he now does sewer work for his town's public works department.
i feel like someone of that caliber, someone with that type of high-level clearance and experience, would be doing something in Washington, or continuing in some field of high specialty.
but i don't really know how that works. i've never known a "Special Forces guy", so i can't speak for their typical experiences post-service.
now, i don't want to grill a veteran about his time in the service, and i'm no expert on this type of thing, so i can't determine whether he's being truthful.
i also don't want to consider a real veteran a liar, and i definitely don't want to keep asking pushy questions about his time in the armed forces.
but i used to be a big fan of Don Shipley, and a lot of what this guy says sounds very similar to those fake Navy SEAL types that Shipley would call out.
is there any way of finding out whether this guy is for real? are there certain questions i can ask that won't offend a veteran, but are things only real Rangers/veterans might know?
he seems like an ok guy, but i just have this weird feeling. and if he's lying about something like this, that definitely makes me feel like he's untrustworthy, or even mentally unstable.
your thoughts are greatly appreciated, and thank you for your service to our great nation :)
