How many Airforce pilots actually get to fly?

Posted on November 10, 2019

I am planning to join the airforce (USAF) after I complete my engineering degree. I have my private pilot's license.

I heard that only a fraction of men and women who apply with the intention of serving as piilots actually get to serve in that capacity, with the rest being slotted into various support roles on the ground. Is this true?

Because I don't want to serve out my contract in some meaningless role, something I had no intention of doing, as this is a significant portion of my life I am dedicating to the military. I want to make sure I have all the facts before I enlist.
