Limited MOS due to depression?
Posted on
Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, just needed some help!
I was diagnosed with depression due to situational matters regarding mother being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and losing my grandma , subsequently I was put on antidepressants (prozac to lexapro to venlafaxine, and then finally to desvenlafaxine which ended up working well for me), as of a few months ago I was taken off of them, I am, however, still seeking therapy as a precaution but so far so good!
Pretty much all of my family knows about the plans I have other than my mother, overall we don't have the best relationship because of a lot of things that happened in the past and I'm not sure how to break the news-- especially with the fact that she has a terminal illness. I know she's going to have a bad reaction when I tell her and make a big deal out of it because she's always put forth the idea that I'm some fragile little girl that isn't capable of doing something difficult among other reasons. She's very clingy and absolutely hates the idea of me going to college in general since I'd have to leave home if that gives you an idea of the situation. Ultimately, I know it's my decision and her opinions can't change what I'm going to do, nonetheless, I'd still like to save her feelings and make it as easy as possible for the both of us.
So far my plan is to hopefully go to OCS after I get my BA in Computer Science which will give me plenty of time to ensure my mental health is in good condition and get out of therapy as I'll be starting college this August. I'm heavily considering Army, but I'm not dead set on a branch yet.
Anyway, here are my questions...
Doing research I've seen a lot about the limitations on MOS because of previous depression, but I haven't been able to find any information that states which are out of the question, does anyone have articles or knowledge about this?
Any tips or personal experience on the best way to tell my mom about my decision? (because apparently "hey mom! sorry about your cancer also I'm joining the military and leaving" isn't the best choice...)
and finally, I haven't done much research on ROTC yet, but would it be more beneficial to wait and do OCS or go through ROTC for my four years in hopes of getting commissioned?
Thanks!
