One of the oddest and most frustrating things about being in the military is something most people wouldn’t think of: Banker’s hours. It’s often a hurdle to get time off work to ‘run an errand’, go to an appointment, or just get anything done.

Everything and everyone closes before you get off, is too far away, or says ‘come back another day’ like you can just tell your chain of command you need more time off. Good luck if you’re overseas and try to call stateside and have to stay up weird hours just to catch people during your time zone. Up early to call? Nope. They open at 9 AM and close at 3. Then they don’t answer during their 3 hour lunch. If they do answer, you’re referred to get a referral to get approval to be referred. Try again another day. The issue is compounded even further for junior enlisted who can’t hang out in the hallway on hold for an hour, or go off post to an appointment 3 times because they are getting the run around. Chain of command gets frustrated and says ‘do it in your spare time’ which does not exist before 1630. Oh and to further make this niche: Try working in a SCIF. Good freaking luck. Badging in and out and having to go outside just to get your phone to make an important call and having your supervisor walk outside to look for you for ‘being on your phone outside during work hours’.
