Showing military ID when/if pulled over for speeding?
Posted on
The first time I was ever pulled over for speeding as a young military member, I got a ticket. I was telling a friend about it later, and he said "you should have just given them your military ID, they always let you off."
I took that advice, and in the two times after that (over many years) I was pulled over, I handed the officer my military ID, along with license and registration. I got completely off both times. No ticket, no written warning, just a verbal "hey, slow it down". Turns out my friend was 100% right.
I've since developed mixed feelings about this. Part of me thinks it's an entitled brat move, implying/expecting to get off on something I'm legitimately guilty of just because of my military status. I should be holding myself to a higher standard, not a lower one and looking to dodge consequences. The other part of me thinks it's damn effective, has always worked for me, and who needs the fine and hit to insurance.
Thoughts on this? Entitled brat or smart move? And yes, I know the better move is to slow down and not get pulled over in the first place.
