Why does the Military have such a distinct vocabulary?

I really don't get it, but I love it none the less. I've been playing Modern Warfare 2 alot lately (I'm not sure whether this is accurate), and I just love the way they talk. For example, in the "Team Player" mission, when a ranger requests an air strike and they say "Warlord, Warlord this is Hunter 2-1 requesting air strike grid 252171, target is a white 12 story apartment building over."
I love the wording, but I seriously don't get how they come up with it. I'd love to know, and sorry for all the typing
